‘No other technique for the conduct of life attaches the
individual so firmly to reality…. as laying emphasis on
work’ for his work at least… gives him a secure place in
a portion of reality, in the human community’ –
Sigmund Freud

EMOTIONAL HEALTH AND WORK:
Work forms
an integral part of our sense of being… both as individual and
in realizing one’s innate potential.
This
besides the fact that most of us have to work to earn a
living!
Our focus
is to help clients to cope with work stresses and adaptations.
Also to look at options in terms of career choice and career
change when necessary.
In the
history of work, employees for many decades were taken for
granted by many employers and the only principle that mattered
was the profit principle. Though this may still be the case,
there has been a recent shift of
business realizing the value
of it’s workers as the
main ingredient for success
Research
also has shown that work is an important factor in overall
wellness as well as later fulfilment in life.
As such a
new term
WORK
DYSFUNCTIONS
has
been coined (Rodney L. Lowman;
Counselling & Psychotherapy of Work Dysfunctions, 1993,
APA)
Treatment
for work dysfunctions requires, according to Lowman, a
particular and not overly individualized approach by Health
Professionals - suitable for today’s complex work
environments.
Goal
directed and brief interventions, with work as the primary
focus, are considered suitable.
The
following are some aspects suggested by Lowman (p 43) as a
Useful “Clinical Taxonomy of Psychological Work-Related
Dysfunctions”:
*
Disturbances in the capacity to work,
e.g. underachievement, procrastination, occupational
misfit, organizational misfit, fear of either success or
failure.
* Patterns of over commitment; Type A
personality, Burnout, ‘work-addiction (workaholism).

| · |
Personality dysfunctions & work:
e.g..

work. |
| · |

e.g. work-family conflict. |
| · |
Situational Stress e.g.
reactions to changes in work-role (new job). |
| · |
Dysfunctional working conditions: Defective job design
(role overload, ambiguity);
defective supervision. |
| · |
Dysfunctional interpersonal
relationships. Counselling and Consultations can
be arranged either privately or within organizations.
